Un homme jeté par terre, un chapeau qui roule sur le sol, une ombre qui le ramasse pour le remettre sur sa tête, le tout en ombre chinoise sur la portière d’une voiture. En quelques secondes et seulement trois plans, Steven Spielberg remet les pendules à l’heure. Le meilleur d’entre tous, c’est toujours lui. Le quatrième Indiana Jones peut commencer. Un roller coaster qui ne va plus s’arrêter durant deux heures.

Si l’on ne peut nier que Le Royaume du Crâne de Cristal respecte les codes les plus immuables de la trilogie originale, jusqu’à se plier à l’exercice de la « montagne » du plan d’ouverture, le film englobe un univers bien plus large que prévu, renvoyant autant aux trois premiers opus qu’à la série Young Indiana Jones (l’anecdote sur Pancho Villa) et même aux romans dérivés (l’expédition à laquelle participa Jones pour le gouvernement en 1947, l’évocation du personnage de Deidre, un amour de jeunesse, etc.)
